Surprise Party for Mike

Last Saturday we had a surprise party for my step-dad, Mike, who turned 55.  It worked out great because he didn't even suspect anything so when he came around the corner of the house and we yelled 'surprise' he really was surprised! :)  It was a good day for a good guy.

Food I Hate

Last night, Covey and I went to the Brick Oven for dinner with some friends who are moving away.  I was pretty excited to get my pizza because anyone who has been there knows that the pizza is awesome.  Well, we got the pizza and when it was put down in front of me, I almost started crying.  There, scattered all over my pizza, were red and green peppers and onions.  I really hate peppers and onions, especially on my pizza.  The only, and I repeat, ONLY time I ever eat peppers is in salsa and the ONLY time I ever eat onions is in salsa and homemade onion rings.  Period.  I was too hungry and too bugged to do anything but take off the offending vegetables and eat my pizza and hope I'd gotten all of them off.  There is nothing worse than biting into something yummy like pizza and unexpectedly crunching into something yucky like peppers and onions.  Well, except maybe throwing up.  But even after that, you usually feel better.  Peppers and onions?  Not so much.

Covey in the News

A family friend of ours works at KSL and when Covey was looking for a job (I love that that is in the past tense!), he asked her to pass his resume around and see if anyone knew of any jobs available.  Turns out that nothing really came of it in regards to a job, but someone at KSL who knows our friend was writing a story on the difficulty people are having in trying to find a job and wanted to interview Covey.  It was really ironic because the same day this guy from KSL called was the day Covey got his new job.  But the guy came any way and interviewed him.  The article went up today and here's the link if you want to read it: Covey in the News.  There's also an audio interview if you want to list to that too. :)

Covey Got A Job!

COVEY GOT A JOB!  COVEY GOT A JOB!  COVEY GOT A JOB!

Covey got a job as an assistant project manager at a company in Springville called Wencor.  They make airplane parts, but he would be more in the account managing.  He applied for it about 3 week ago or so and after 3 interviews and a week of waiting, he got a call this morning and the offered him the job!  It is a salary job!  Yeah!  I cannot even say how much of a relief and a blessing this is.  It has been tough to live only on what I make, but I know that we were blessed in so many ways that I can't even name.  And now, Covey has a job.  Hallelujah!

School Withdrawl

I am having school withdrawls.  I realized the other day that this fall will be the first fall that I haven't been in school since I was in preschool.  That is 21 years of school!  I am actually kind of sad that I won't be going back to school this fall.  Sometimes I drive past BYU and I am really bummed that I won't be walking around campus this fall.  Hopefully I can go back to school in a year or two and start my Master's degree.  Go figure that I just finished my degree and I'm already thinking about going back!

Not As Young As We Once Were

Last night, Covey and I went and hung out with our friends Nate and Kayla.  We didn't really have anything planned but we knew we wanted to hang out.  After roasting hot dogs and marshmallows in Nate's parents backyard, we played a game of horse (I won!), then we started playing around on the lawn.  Kayla and I were reminiscing about our dancing days and how much we miss them and so we started trying some of the old dance moves we knew.  Then the boys decided to try doing some of the things we were doing, but mostly ended up doing headstands and front handsprings.  I tell you what--we are not as flexible as we once were.  By the time we were done, we were feeling kind of sore.  So we decided to go inside and eat some ice cream.  It was a fun night pretending like we were young(er) again, but at the same time, it was a mean reminder that we are not as young as we once were.

Kayla was the master at headstands

The boys trying to do headstands with only their heads.  It gave them a whole new appreciation for break dancers!

Kayla and I still looking gorgeous even after our attempts at toe touches, heel stretches and barrel rolls. :)

Sometimes I Wish I Were A Boy...

Sometimes I wish I were a boy.  Not that I don't like being a girl, but there are certain aspects of being a girl that can be so ANNOYING.  Namely, putting on makeup (a minimum of 5 minutes--more if I put on mascara), blow drying my hair (at least 10 minutes), picking out my clothes for the day (it hard to choose what you feel like you want to wear), the whole visit from Mother Nature every month (cramps SUCK), and so on.  Most of these things deal with getting ready in the morning, which is maybe why I'm sometimes so bugged about the fact that there are these gender differences--particularly in that area.  If you're a girl, you know what I'm talking about.  If you're a boy, you've probably heard a girl complaining about these things:

Question of the Day:  How can boys get ready so fast?!

They shower (sometimes)

fix their hair (sometimes)

brush their teeth (sometimes)

get dressed (hopefully)

and be out the door in less than 5 minutes.  How do they do it?

Covey woke up late this morning and was seriously ready and out the door in 5 minutes.  Me?  I had gotten up 30 minutes beforehand and I was still getting ready for the day.  It was so lame.

2 Years, 2 Months, 2 Weeks and 2 Days

I just looked at my little calendar widget that shows how long Covey and I have been married. As of today we have been married for 2 years, 2 months, 2 weeks and 2 days.  How fun is that?  :)

Sapphire Fin aka Saffy

Covey and I are the proud new owners of a betta fish.  It was kind of a random and impulsive purchase, but a fun and relatively inexpensive purchase nonetheless.  We went to PetsMart on Saturday and found the best looking betta there.  He is purple and blue and red and we think he is awesome. :)  We were trying to come up with a good name for him.  Covey wanted to name him 'Bluie' at first but I thought we should come up with something better than that for our new awesome pet.  We finally settled on 'Sapphire Fin' calling him 'Saffy' for short.  We are kind of excited about our new pet.  However, that might change when we go out of town and need someone to fish-sit for us.  Any volunteers?  He's really cute. :)

Covey the Mechanic

Last Thursday when Covey and I got home from Wally World (aka WalMart), Covey went to get out of the car and couldn't.  I thought something was just stuck in the door that was preventing him from getting out so I went around to open the door.  I opened it without a problem and there was nothing stuck in the door.  Hmmm...  I shut the door again and he tried to get out and couldn't.  Lovely.  By this time, it was about 9:30pm and light was fading fast.  Covey tried to take the interior of the door off, but we couldn't find all the screws that needed unscrewing to allow this so we waited until Saturday to see what could be done.  In the meantime, I had to roll down the window to let myself out of the car.  Annoying.  So come Saturday, Covey decided to take the door apart again to see if he can find out why the door is broken.  The good news is, he fixed it!  He is so smart.  :)

Then, Covey went to work on the windshield.  When we were driving back from our 24 hour trip, a massive truck flipped a massive rock at our front windshield and we got a massive chip and the beginnings of a massive crack.  Covey being the money-saver he is, ordered a do-it-yourself rock chip fixing kit.

Thankfully, it seems to have fixed the crack quite well and we saved ourselves a good chunk of money.  Yay for Covey!

24 Hour Trip

This weekend we went on a short (24 hour long) trip to my Dad's property in Fruitland, UT which is just outside of Strawberry Reservior.  He and my step-mom, Sharon, co-own the property with Sharon's brother.  It is 12 acres of sagebrush, dirt, shrubs and a little stream.  We decided to go up there on short notice for a little weekend getaway.  We had a lot of fun four-wheeling, relaxing and spending time with family in the great outdoors.  Here are some pictures of the fun:

Hardcore

After going hiking in Zion's, Covey and I determined that we needed to get our own Camelbaks rather than borrowing his dad's each time we wanted to go hiking.  Shortly after this, we were at Costco where we saw some Camelbaks for $25!  We were so excited and we knew we had to get one for each of us.  When we got home, I told Covey that we needed to try on and model our new backpacks.  We felt pretty hardcore, as is evident from our photos.

Sad Day for Covey

...but happy day for me! Let me explain: We were getting ready for church on Father's Day when I heard "oh no!" coming from the bedroom. I walked in to find Covey holding this:

If you look closely at this picture, you'll see that Covey is holding his phone in pieces--melted pieces to be exact.  He was quite sad about this, which is to be expected.

When Covey had plugged his phone in to charge the night before, he had set it on top of the lamp and then later turned the lamp on to read, forgetting that his phone was on top of it.  So the next morning, he found the back of his beloved Blackberry had been melted.  Literally.  The back of the phone had melted and curved around the shape of the lightbulb, his battery was bent and his sim card had been melted and partially fused to the inside of the phone.  Needless to say, he needed a new phone.  Here's the part where I explain why all this was good for me. :)

I had actually been holding out on getting a new phone from Tmobile until I found one that I liked.  I was due for an upgrade back in April but had kind of forgotten about it until this incident.  I told Covey, "You know what this means?  You get to use my old phone and I get a new one!  Yay!"  Covey didn't really think that there was any yay-ing to be done about this and I felt bad about his phone melting.  I really did.  But this meant I could get a new phone!

The next day we went to the Tmobile store and I found this little beauty:
A Nokia Nuron

I was pretty excited about my new phone.  Sadly, Covey is going to have to settle for using my phone for the next year until he can qualify for an upgrade.  Until then, I will let him use my phone to play with.  Sometimes.  When I'm not playing with it.  :)

So Domestic

I would like one of these:
It doesn't have to be this one exactly.  Just one that is in good condition.  A used one would even be fine.

Remember how a few months ago I said that I was going to be all ambitious and make a quilt?  Well, that ambition died a little when I realized that my little sewing machine didn't have a back stitch option on it.  What?  No back stitch, you say?  That's right.  There isn't one.  I read the instructions backwards and forwards and inspected my little machine inside and out.  No back stitch.  Turns out that the sewing machine I have is really only meant to be used for crafts.  I don't quite understand this considering it says 'Dressmaker' on the side of it.  They should have labeled it 'Craftmaker' so as to not confuse those of us who want to use it to make quilts, or dresses for that matter.

For the time being, I must try and be patient and wait until Covey gets a job before I can purchase a new sewing machine.  Yes, I know that there are plenty of sewing machines on sale on KSL and craigslist and ebay.  And as good as the deals may be, and as much as I want one, we really can't afford one right now.  If anyone has one that they would like to let me borrow for the next couple months, I would greatly appreciate it.  I have a stack of lovely material that wants to be made into a quilt.  Please help me fulfill this desire if you are able to.  Otherwise, I will be happy to accept money into the 'Help Shani Get A Sewing Machine Fund'.
