July Catch Up

So here's my belated July post:

At the beginning of the summer, my friend Lindsay had told me about a Mommy and Me swim class that was held at the Scera Pool during the summer.  She had done it the year before with Lily and said it was a lot of fun.  The class wasn't very expensive (maybe $50) and it lasted 2 weeks for 30 minutes each day.  Covey and I had agreed that we wanted Makadie to start getting familiar with being in and around the water so these swimming lessons were the perfect thing to start this summer.  I signed up for the class that was at the same time as Lindsay and her daughter and it was fun to be able to see them each day.

It would be an understatement to say that she loved it.  It was all I could do to get sunscreen on her before she was trying to charge into the water.  She was definitely the most vocal and active kid in the class, even though the ages ranged from 6 months to 3 years.  She loved being in the water, splashing, kicking and even being dunked!  She didn't cry once and hated when we had to leave.  I'd call it a success!  I definitely plan on doing it next year with her too.

At the beginning of the month, my sister and I and some friends held a bachellorette party for my good friend, Lisa, who was getting married.  We went to Olive Garden and had so much fun laughing and joking and being a little obnoxious.  haha, I'm sure the people around us weren't happy with us, but oh well. :)

For the 4th of July, we went to Covey's parents for the annual 4th of July BBQ.  We got to see some family that we generally only see about once a year and I even met a few that I'd never met before.  Covey's extended family is really big.  His dad was the youngest of six kids and so Covey has a ton of cousins who are the same age as my parents, which is kind of crazy.  Makadie had fun playing with her cousins and running around the yard.

Just a few days later, my sister, Dani, had her baby boy.  He was born on July 6th really early in the morning.  She was a champ and only had to push for about 30 minutes.  Dani and Stephen weren't quite sure what to name him at first, but eventually chose Jackson Stephen Jones.  I'm not gonna lie: I am a pretty proud aunt.  My step-sister has a couple of kids so this wasn't technically my first niece or nephew, but Dani is my sister, so Jackson is my first full-blooded nephew.  :)  He was a pretty cute baby when he was born.  Some babies look a little funny, but he looked pretty normal.  We went to visit them the next morning and I took some pictures.  Makadie loved him the minute she saw him and hasn't been able to keep her hands off of him since.  (Side note: I was actually pregnant, but didn't know it at the time.  So Jackson and our baby will be about 9 months apart.)

Yeah, she had a baby less than 12 hours ago...

Makadie got really mad that we wouldn't let her get in with Jackson

We always have to take one of these pictures.  Don't ask me why...

Makadie had her 18 month appointment in July.  A few days before her appointment, I noticed that whenever she laid down to go to sleep, she would cough.  Nothing crazy, but I thought it was a little weird she only did it when she went to sleep.  The morning of the day of her appointment, I laid her down for a nap and she seemed to sleep okay with the exception of the coughing.  But about an hour and a half later, I heard her coughing and it sounded like a seal barking.  The first thought that came to me was, "that sounds like croup".  Makadie had never had croup and I'd never actually heard a kid with croup cough, but plenty of people had said that it sounds just like a seal barking.  Poor girl was crying and coughing when I got her up and she just laid her head on my shoulder and kept coughing.  I actually recorded it on my phone so I could show the doctor, because I wasn't sure if she would keep coughing after she'd been up for a while.  Her appointment wasn't until that afternoon, but I called to see if I could move it up at all to get her in sooner, since I could tell she was miserable.  I was able to move it up an hour, which I figure was better than nothing.

So we went to her appointment and with the exception of the croup, the doctor said she was doing really well and was slightly above average on everything (she had been a little below average up until this point).  He asked me if she was saying at least 10 words and was really surprised when I told him it was more like between 50-75 words that she consistently used.  Makadie is a pretty smart little girl and had been talking beyond "ma ma" and "da da" since about 14-15 months.  Normally, she would have gotten shots at this appointment, but because of the croup, the doctor wanted to wait until she was over it.  He gave me a prescription for some steroids and we left.  Long story short, the steroids were in a liquid form and Makadie hated taking them, no matter how I gave them to her.  I don't blame her though.  I tasted a little and they were pretty nasty.  :(  I mentioned something to my friend Lindsay, whose daughter had had croup a few times and she was surprised they didn't give Makadie a steroid shot instead.  I didn't know that was an option, so I called up the office and asked them to give that to her since I couldn't get her to take the liquid form.  So, in we went, she got a shot and started to feel a lot better after that.

Shortly after that, we celebrated Pioneer Day.  We didn't want to keep Makadie up to see fireworks, but we wanted to do something with her, so we lit up some sparklers.  Granted, it was still light outside and kind of windy, but I think she had a good time anyway.

Also during this month is when we found out we were pregnant with baby #2.  We were actually pretty surprised because although we knew we wanted to have another baby sooner than later, we were expecting it to take us a little longer.  It took us a year and a half to get pregnant with Makadie and while we didn't expect it to take that long with #2, we also didn't think it would happen so fast.  I actually found out on a Sunday about a week or so after Jackson was born.  I was home from church with Makadie who was taking a nap when I just thought, "what the heck.  I'll take a pregnancy test."  When I finally looked at it, I just started to laugh and kept repeating, "no way, no way, no way".  I actually didn't tell Covey until the day after because I was feeling kind of yucky and grumpy that day and I want to be happier when I told him.  Maybe that sounds strange, but in a way, it was kind of fun to keep that little secret to myself for 24 hours...  When I told Covey the next day, he said, "Are you serious?"  and I was like, "yeah, you're going to be a dad again."  He was pretty happy and excited.

We told Makadie but of course she didn't really understand what we meant when we said she was going to be a big sister.  We decided to wait to tell people until I was through my first trimester and I wasn't really showing anyway, so it wasn't all that hard to keep a secret from people.  I still felt nauseous most days, but taking an anti-nausea pill helped, as well as getting a lot of sleep.  Unfortunately with it being summer and so dang hot outside, sometimes I couldn't play with Makadie as much as she would have liked.  At least we had our fence up so she was slightly more contained.  If I had my way, I would have been outside a whole lot more than I was during the first trimester, but it made me feel nauseous if I got too hot, so we just had to take it in spurts.

So that was July.  I took Makadie's 18 month pictures (actually the same day of her doctor's appt) and many, many more pictures, which you can have the pleasure of viewing now. :)

There is no way my little baby is 18 months in these pictures!  She's getting so big and grown up! :(

 She ate a green tomato...

We went to McDonald's one day after swim lessons.  Makadie was so ready for her nap, as you can probably see from this picture, but she definitely enjoyed her fries!

Playing in the water at Grandma and Grandpa Ogden's

This is a picture of Makadie and one of my best friend's daughter's, Livi.  They were in town from CA to bless their baby boy.  I am convinced these two would be great friends if we lived closer to each other!

 Watching a show with daddy

Makadie went through a phase where she wanted to eat a whole yogurt everyday.  She got super messy, but she loved the yogurt!

Makadie thought it would be fun to get in her swimming pool fully clothed.  Obviously she was enjoying herself. :)

I saw an idea on Pinterest of letting your kids paint with water.  So I just grabbed a couple containers, filled them with water, put a little food coloring in them and gave her an old paintbrush.  She had a lot of fun with it, but of course ended up dumping the water out after about 10 minutes and then playing with the containers.  Go figure.

We made raspberry jam and Kadie thought it was a lot of fun to help mash the raspberries.

This makes me miss summer so much! We definitely need to do swimming lessons again even though I will be hugely pregnant and you will have a newborn ha ha.

I know! I keep looking at all these pictures as I was writing the post and I'm missing the sunshine big time. But I am totally down with doing swim lessons again!
